I am going to go ahead and state that I was out of my element for this assignment, in terms of designing the tanks, and worked on this to the best of my ability. However that said my main focus for me on this assignment was the practise and use of 2 point perspective drawing and values to create shades and lighting.
Here is my mood board for this assignment. I was going for a tank in my final design and thus I took references from the few sources I knew of, hence both Star Wars and Halo are featured twice respectively.
To give myself some practise on 2 point perspective I created 3 thumbnails and created my horizon line outside of their borders.
This sketch was a simple draft to block out the shape of a possible design for my tank and as such is low quality.
I did go over it again to detail the draft a little more, making the extensions a little more clear as what they are, hover propulsion.
However instead of following on from this design I decided to follow my previous working practise, in which I focus on an aspect of the thing I am designing (in this case the cockpit of the tank) and make multiple design from which to work from. Here I created 2 cockpit designs, the first being the diamond design, where the tanks barrel flows inside the cockpit as a form of recoil absorption. And the second design is the more cube like cockpit which is designed mainly as a defensive shield to protect it's occupants.
Here I have made 3 designs for the tank treads. The first (with the word GUN written on it) was designed as a basic tread but in fact also had the tanks main barrel attached to it (which would be mirrored on the other side) I later decided against this design as I could not imagine the loading mechanism for the barrels. The second was designed to be a form of battering ram with a front guard, however other than that it is no different to any other tank tread. The third and final design was to be one where the tank's cockpit would be situated directly above the treads similar to how a robot may sit on top of it's tired treads (should it have any).
Like before these are different sketches of possible barrels for my tank, in the end I decided on my original idea of the twin barrels in side the cockpit structure which recoil back inside.
Now that I had decided on my cockpit design and Barrel I sketched out this concept for the final piece. It has 2 air ducts at the rear for ventilation and exhausts as the very back to release emissions. The windscreen is reinforced and the access hatch is situated on the top.
This here was a preliminary sketch to get the feel of where I would place the shapes/geometry of the tank in this 2 point-perspective sketch.
After a second attempt this is the result of my sketch, as you can see I have left in some line extensions to show where the 2 points are coming from on the horizon line. As a sketch I don't feel like this turned out great, especially with the tank treads which would not be able to supper the cockpit. However as a perspective drawing I think this turned out rather well and I feel as though I made good use of the vanishing points to create the geometry.
Finally I scanned in the sketch and in Photoshop I used the techniques we practised in our 6th Session of Photoshop using greyscale to create shading and shadows. the top of the tank has a grey swatch (in Photoshop) of 20, the shaded side has a grey swatch of 60 and the shadow on the floor is a grey swatch of 50.
