Tentacle Creature H/w Project Steve Brown Session 2

This is my mood board of images from which I gained the most influence for my Tentacle creature, particularly the Human/Dalek hybrid Sec, Facehugger and Necromorphs.

These are my preliminary sketches for my creature. My initial design incorporated the idea that the creature itself was just a Human head with the tentacles erected through valves along the jaw line (6 in total) and that it's intake of nutrients was through an octopus like mouth at the base of the head where the spine would be on a normal body.

I began to develop this design. The difference here being that the creature no longer has eyes and that it's only sensory appendage are the tentacles themselves, which still protrude through valves along the jaw line only now there are fewer of them. i also added some context to this creature in that it is now a virus that infects the mind of Human's which stimulates the cells around the base of the neck and essentially rips off the head of the host creating a fifth tentacle where the left-over flesh from the neck becomes a manoeuvrable appendage.

My next set of sketches had the goal of developing the creature in general, for example adding some shading and detail to the neck where the "Adam's apple" is and tendons which are pronounced around the throat. I then decided to modify the backstory of the creature, now the virus infects the mind (it still separates the head from the body like before) and begins to hatch a new organism, which requires the brain for nutrition. Once it's reached a certain stage of growth it begins to force itself out of it's shell.

This sketch was simply a method to focus on different parts of the creature, particularly a portion of the creature protruding from the back of the cracked open skull and the exposed spine where the flesh has been digested by the creature to grow. The second image is just the design seen at a different angle.

Finally this is the product of my initial sketches of the creature, full with colour and shading. I made this image entirely in Photoshop starting with the initial sketch outline, following on I added base colours. After I added shading I decided to add some effects to the design so as not to make the image boring or bland, to achieve this I added a slime affect on the tips of each tentacle and some oozing out of the back of the exposed skull. I also added some colour variation to the skin to portray a rotting effect of the skin as the creature inside slowly digests it's shell.
