1 Point-Perspective H/w Project Steve Brown Session 4

For this weeks after class work we were ask to practise 1 Point-Perspective drawing in 3 stages. 1st If you felt uncomfortable in it you were to follow a video on the subject for beginners. 2nd (and this was what we were all tasked to do) We had to follow Mark Crilley's video on the subject and produce our own copy of his sketch and proceed to paint however we wished. 3rd And finally if we felt confident enough we were told to make our own 1 Point-Perspective drawing. Below is my copy of Mark Crilley's drawing.

I then proceeded to make my own 1 Point-Perspective drawing based on similar styles (post-apocalypse and unknown context).

This my own drawing on the subject and it's based on the themes of a dystopian society. Two figures are travelling on the abandoned roads towards the city before them. The local populace taking refuge in underground silos used to travel from place to place are looking on toward the odd pair. Why are they above ground? Are they not in pain? What are they thinking? You see in the above world the air is too polluted for safe breathing and that is why people make use of the silo's to travel.

Finally the painted copy of the Mark Crilley drawing. Here I used green, brown. grey and yellow colours to create the effect of mildew and rot across the concrete. They sky itself is intended to be filled with fog and the man is wading through sewage, the sewage grates on the left also show this fact. In the original end paint I used scratches and line drawing to show the effect of rushing water flowing past the figure but through a happy accident I improved the image to what you see above by trying to make the lines themselves stand out I altered the levels and the effect was not what I expected, showing a far more decayed look to the environment.

Gun H/w Project Steve Brown Session 3

Above you can see my mood board for design influence for my own Gun creation.

These were my initial sketches of guns, by starting with techniques taught in our life drawing class by using scratches and smudges to create shape and form. I also laid out the 4 types of guns I decided to choose from, a blunderbuss, a Rifle, a Handgun or a wrist-mounted gun.

I decided to focus on Handguns for my design. The developments of my handguns began with the grip, stock or handle of the gun itself, with the first sketch being the wrist-mounted stock. I created more until I came to a handle design that I liked.

I then began to develop main body of the gun itself, by designing scopes to create some intrigue to the design rather than finishing with a bland object that has little going on apart from the barrel, whilst updating the design of the gun itself.

Following on from the scope designs I decided to add some classic design to the gun through the use of a Flintlock mechanism on the barrel which once fired uses the recoil of the shot to propel the flint back into the upright position for quick, multiple shots with excessive reloads. It was also here that I decided on a barrel design influenced by the Hand Cannon's in Destiny.

And this is my final image. the colour scheme I chose was one that was designed to be typical to most guns I.E. Grey, brown, Black but one that would also incorporate more colour to liven the image; taking influence from Destiny's HandCannon, Star-lord's gun and Guns featured in the video game Fable 3.

Tentacle Creature H/w Project Steve Brown Session 2

This is my mood board of images from which I gained the most influence for my Tentacle creature, particularly the Human/Dalek hybrid Sec, Facehugger and Necromorphs.

These are my preliminary sketches for my creature. My initial design incorporated the idea that the creature itself was just a Human head with the tentacles erected through valves along the jaw line (6 in total) and that it's intake of nutrients was through an octopus like mouth at the base of the head where the spine would be on a normal body.

I began to develop this design. The difference here being that the creature no longer has eyes and that it's only sensory appendage are the tentacles themselves, which still protrude through valves along the jaw line only now there are fewer of them. i also added some context to this creature in that it is now a virus that infects the mind of Human's which stimulates the cells around the base of the neck and essentially rips off the head of the host creating a fifth tentacle where the left-over flesh from the neck becomes a manoeuvrable appendage.

My next set of sketches had the goal of developing the creature in general, for example adding some shading and detail to the neck where the "Adam's apple" is and tendons which are pronounced around the throat. I then decided to modify the backstory of the creature, now the virus infects the mind (it still separates the head from the body like before) and begins to hatch a new organism, which requires the brain for nutrition. Once it's reached a certain stage of growth it begins to force itself out of it's shell.

This sketch was simply a method to focus on different parts of the creature, particularly a portion of the creature protruding from the back of the cracked open skull and the exposed spine where the flesh has been digested by the creature to grow. The second image is just the design seen at a different angle.

Finally this is the product of my initial sketches of the creature, full with colour and shading. I made this image entirely in Photoshop starting with the initial sketch outline, following on I added base colours. After I added shading I decided to add some effects to the design so as not to make the image boring or bland, to achieve this I added a slime affect on the tips of each tentacle and some oozing out of the back of the exposed skull. I also added some colour variation to the skin to portray a rotting effect of the skin as the creature inside slowly digests it's shell.

Robot H/w Project Steve Brown Session 1

For the Robot H/w we were assigned I began by brainstorming ideas/influences for my robot. In the end my main inspirations came from WALL-E, the Halo series and X-Men: Days of Future Past, specifically my inspiration was taken from WALL-E himself, 343 Guilty Spark (a monitor of the Halo installations) and the Sentinels. The initial sketches started by the design of the head which was influenced greatly by Guilty Spark.

I then proceeded to create a body for my Robot that would fit the head I had designed with the idea (following on from the design influence) that the body is segmented into parts and that those parts all float separate from one another. I also had the idea that the head extends and retracts, in it's extended mode it can have a full 360 degree view of it's environment but when it is retracted it can focus on greater detail on what is directly in front of my him.

With this sketch I decided to try and update the design of the Robot instead of the use of coils for arms I changed them to Nanobots (influenced by the Sentinels) for 2 reasons. 1st I wanted to add some organic shapes to the design as he was getting a bit clunky and 2nd again with a more natural approach most machines are depicted as cold and unnatural but I liked the idea of a combination, sort of like the idea of symbiosis the Nanobots and my Robot assist one another.

The sketches on this page were simply tests. I had added these Nanobots to add a more organic feel but the body was rather plain, so I attempted to add depth to the shell, but in playing around I had an epiphany with the cross shaped ball on the right.

With it I came up with a background to my Robot. He was the last Robot built by a mechanic in a workshop but left incomplete, he had no duties for him to complete as he was  not programmed with that knowledge, dazed, confused and curious he sets out to discover the world around him. With this idea in mind I designed his core to be exposed, since the mechanic did not complete him, this also makes him inherently docile and cautious.

Following on from the last sketches I decided to update my Robots mobility situation from a steam powered hover system to all terrain track tyres. I also added an antennae system on top of my Robot's head as before there was no clear communication system implemented into the design.

With the design updated numerous times I decided to finish up the design and add colour, using light shading with my pencil grey I added a blue finish mixed with this grey to add a metallic blue effect. For the core I decided that with the wiring and the material of the metal itself there would be a greater range of colour on the inside than the outside so I aded a Copper Brown to the wiring with 2 gold bars surrounding the core and the core itself having an Orange - Red colour to portray heated up metal. As for the eye socket i decided on a luminescent blue colour with a deep dark blue for the sensor itself. For the tyres I added a typical grey colour but for the joints connecting the tyres to the body I decided on a Brown to portray that the joints come from the inside of the Robot similar to the coloration of the inside of the body as opposed to the outside.
I named my Robot P.R.A.T (Practical Robot Adequate Technician)
